Count It All Joy – James Chapter 1
Discover how trials can strengthen your faith, build endurance, and draw you closer to God when you choose to trust Him through every challenge.
This message centers on the spiritual battle that primarily takes place in the mind, focusing on “thoughts, ideals, and suggestions” as the means by which the enemy attacks believers. The speaker emphasizes that the enemy cannot directly assault the flesh without God’s permission but attacks through mental and spiritual deception. Jesus’s example during His 40 days in the wilderness is highlighted as a key model for combating such attacks using biblical truth.
The heart of the message is a call to rely not on personal strength but on the whole armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6:10-17, which includes truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. The proper application of biblical knowledge is crucial in overcoming the devil’s schemes.
The message further addresses the struggle between the flesh and the spirit, drawing on Romans 7 to explain the internal conflict believers experience and the necessity of surrendering to God’s Spirit to overcome sin.
The speaker also critiques superficial religious practices and emphasizes humility, continuous repentance, forgiveness, and walking in the light through fellowship with God. The ultimate victory over the enemy comes by standing firm in God’s Word and truth.
Ephesians 6:10-17
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God… that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil… Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace… taking the shield of faith… the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Romans 7:13-25
Describes the struggle between the flesh and spirit, highlighting that sin dwells in the flesh, but the mind serves the law of God:
“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing… For the good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do… Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”
John 8:41-44
Jesus speaks of the devil as the father of lies and deception:
“Ye are of your father the devil… he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.”
Hebrews 11:6 (implied reference)
“Without faith, it is impossible to please God.”
John 14:6 (implied reference)
“Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
